Meet the Plantain Collective!

Our last Oxjam event was a really cool night, guests Yabba Funk were amazing! To catch up with Plantain, check out our audio clip of Radio Favela’s podcast feature section on Plantain featuring part of the resident Guerrilla Suave Soundsystem, DJ Arnaud Oya Bun & Fratts on percussion. It also features a brief chat with Plantain member & resident DJ, Curtis Foss. Hope you love it!

Here’s some further info on us:

Plantain is a collective of creatives working collaboratively toward a series of cultural events & projects to stimulate, inform, and entertain our guests and ourselves. We started as a group of friends at and around Goldsmiths wanting to share our eclectic culture and our first event was the private view for Smiths Magazine, featuring an installation by artist Rumi Josephs. We had an amazing live performance from the talented Rahel, and from Jendor & Nu Brand Flexxx. Off the success of the night we decided to continue toward more projects. We’ve since gone on to host an open-air cinema on the roof terrace at Cordy House, and a series of monthly music events with live bands and performances at Favela Chic. We’ve had the pleasure of working with artists Lester Lyons-Hookman, Zeena Zakaria, Rumi Josephs and Duval Timothy. And musical artists Rahel, Jendor, Tim the Bucket Drummer, DJ Arnaud, Fratts, Nu Brand Flexxx, Curtis Foss, The Hempolics, DJ Budgie, United Vibrations, Afrikan Boy, Dj Sef, Tanya Morgan, Spec Boogie, Brassroots, Natty Bo, Grippa, Asheber & the Afrikan Revolution, KMT, Tanya Auclair, & Yabba Funk. We look forward to welcoming Notting Hill Arts residents Secousse (A.J Holmes, Vamanos, & Moroka) & A.J Holmes & the Hackney Empire for their live performances at this months event on November 11 at Favela Chic.

what i do want to say however is..

ARGHHHHHHHHH

so an old friend asked me why i “look like a lesbian these days” O_O

my first impulse was to ask him for a detailed explanation (naturally including drawings, pie charts, witness testimonies and live demonstrations) of what a bog-standard lesbian supposedly ‘looks like’ and how my current look directly correlates?

but for him to be imbecilic enough to ask me that in the first place i thought it’d probably be a stretch to expect him to even know what a lesbian is full stop.

Its weird how people feel alienated by growth/evolution that doesn’t involve them… is it weird that my motivations have changed over time? cant people just strive to be the best versions of themselves regardless of how other people might react?
(disc: this obviouuusly wouldn’t apply if you felt the best version of yourself was to be a cat murderer or a real-people murderer.. )

WOUND has gone audio for your listening pleasure!

So, just when we thought we’d maxed out on help and support from so many different sources for our WOUND show, Ruth Barnes of The Other Woman radio fame cut us a great podcast to help promote our show. Unreal! Kate, Carianne and I recorded our musings about WOUND over the weekend, and Ruth has notched us up as this week’s Girl(s) About Town. We’re right at the end of the podcast, but there’s loads of great stuff on there including the funky, dark pop sounds of THE HORN THE HUNT [check out their ace website; they're also on Facebook] and info about Woolly Hat Day [because its getting freeeezing], so it’s worth kicking back for the whole 40 minute special.
