Vasilisa Forbes: No Affinity to Any Place

‘No Affinity to Any Place’ was a project that explored the location of Camberwell and its surrounding area, focusing on Peckham.

Vasilisa Forbes’ approach to the project was through isolating the architecture within the area by removing it from it’s surrounding content and ordering the information in a simple manner of a series. “I aimed to take an interpretation of the atmosphere of the area into another context, both the most obvious context of the buildings that make up the area and the people within and how we are affected by that visual experience of direct ’seeing’ when in a certain ‘place’”, she explains.

What is intriguing about this series are the building’s ability to stand strongly on their own as unpretentious objects but also sit beside one another to create a never ending series; a sense of repetition and monotony that can be dissected to emphasize an individual strength and importance. “The isolated buildings feature as though they could be side by side in reality, creating a personal variation on the area – distorting what is real and making my own ‘village’ out of the buildings that exist within the space”, she adds.

Vasilisa expresses that, “the idea is to interactively manipulate and distort the architecture and presence within the space so that any individual can create their own space out of what already exists within Peckham (the chosen area). Our experience of a place transforms it completely, and makes it into a completely different entity, each of our approaches is our own, and it is interesting to see how others would arrange the buildings if able to construct their order in their own way.”
