Sandra Autukaite: Unconventional Collectables

Broken tiles, doll hands and bird skulls…

Sandra Autukaite, an LCC Foundation Graphic Design student, collects found objects using the natural environment and draws inspiration from them. Her artist process can be defined through her sketch books, which showcase detailed sketches of unique, vintage artefacts using unconventional material such as envelopes. Indeed, her sketch books can be viewed as art works in their own right.

Autukaite’s process is clear in her “Heygate Flowers” series, which contains both a sense of sarcasm and sympathy. She drew the idea from the political issues surrounding the terminated estate and the eviction of residents. By taking abandoned pieces from the area, she staged a home environment. True to her art, Autukaite negotiated with the police to allow her to finish the installation in 3 hours until it had to be disposed of. I guess the show must go on.

Smile for London

“Where did the weekend go…? Where did the festive period go?!” These and other variants will be likely thoughts going through the minds of underground commuters every morning come January. In that respect, Smile for London – a campaign that will be projected on London Underground’s digital screens for two weeks on weekday mornings from 17 January 2011, cannot be timelier.

The phrase “complimenting advertising with art” can be used to summarise the Smile for London campaign. Launched by the company Meme Partnership and its media partner CBS Outdoor UK, the campaign is calling for the submissions of twenty second silent-piece moving images; animations, moving images or films.

The videos are meant to be positive stimulants and in a way reward commuters for their daily mission of waking up early to get to work via the Underground; the videos are meant to put a smile on their otherwise uninspired faces.

Taking the reigns of this campaign is LCC Graphic & Media Design [Moving Image] Alumni, Jo Kotas. “We want to celebrate the creative talents of our city and at the same time lift the spirits of London’s commuters. The project has already captured the imagination of some very talented and respected individuals,” says Jo.

Two such individuals can be seen in the likes of Malcolm Wong and Laura Jane Warrington. Currently in their third year at LCC Graphic & Media Design, the pair has followed the brief to a T with their submission London Mornings. Photographic stills of London – as the morning around her unfolds- are put together to create a montage of feel-good morning-moments: “a window through which commuters could view parts of the city awakening”, as Malcolm describes it.

Be Brave is a publication created by two LCC graduates; Alex Hunting and Charlie Hocking. It recounts the benefits and drawbacks of internships from both sides of the working world. Had a booking for the studio today at uni with Petra, Iris and Vicki who are also hereby known as my babes. I’ve actually never used a studio properly before, they’re so intimidating and I don’t know much about lighting. These are just test shots, so excuse how technically lame they may be. I got some better ones which I shall post soon so do hold your breath. Until you turn blue.
