He’s temporarily given up the spiky bars for a soothing soulful sound and is ready to unleash it with his forthcoming album entitled ‘The Defamation Of Strickland Banks’. I caught up with the man himself, Ben Drew (via telephone), to talk music, acting and what he’s got in store for the future.

Less Common More Sense: The Defamation of Strickland Banks is your first album in nearly four years, what’s been keeping you busy?

Ben Drew: I directed a film, and wrote a feature film, I think that has been taking up my time as well as the next record. A lot of people don’t know this, but the next record is actually two albums and this is just one of those albums and the other one hasn’t been released yet. The other album is called The Ballad of Belmarsh and is a straightforward hip hop album which is the story of Strickland Banks told through hip hop music and narrated by Plan B, whereas The Defamation of Strickland Banks is Strickland Banks’ story through his own eyes, which is why it’s told in Motown because he’s a Motown singer.

For me it’s not important what genre of music it is, it’s the story, because I feel that’s what Plan B embodies, he’s a storyteller, a film director, I like to call what I do a ‘film for the blind’. Therefore if I’m a filmmaker, it means when I make different albums they shouldn’t ever sound the same because otherwise I’d be making the same film twice. I feel the first record was a collection of short stories that I wrote in order to prepare myself for this big massive story, and that’s what The Defamation of Strickland Banks is.

He (Strickland Banks) is a successful soul singer who gets wrongly convicted of a crime that he hasn’t committed and he gets sent to jail, and in jail he has to struggle to survive. He’s famous, everyone wants a bit of him and if you listen to The Defamation of Strickland Banks it kind of tells a story from the start ‘Love Goes Down’ and ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ are the songs that made him famous and he’s playing them at a live show and then comes off stage, goes backstage, gets changed and goes out with his entourage on the piss, gets into a fight, meets a girl and brings her back to his hotel, that’s ‘Stay Too Long’. ‘She Said’ is him in court and she’s accusing him of something that he hasn’t done and he eventually gets sent down.

‘Welcome To Hell’ is him going to jail. You have ‘Hard Times’ which is just a generic song about hardships which he’s obviously been through and you get to the Recluse where he doesn’t wash or shave because people are trying to attack him in prison. Now in-between the Recluse and the next song an event happens which makes him wanna save up all his cigarettes and trade them in for a shank so he can protect himself. That next song is called ‘Trading In My Cigarettes’. Now all the little gaps that the first album jumps over and doesn’t highlight are the details that are in The Ballad of Belmarsh.

The Ballad of Belmarsh is like the deleted scenes, but it’s told through really dark hip hop, the way I made the first album and originally I wanted to release them together but we felt it would just confuse people having two albums out at the same time and also the label didn’t feel that they could market the hip hop and they didn’t think radio would play it, which they wouldn’t. We found out from the first album, pretty quickly, that the way I like to make hip hop is not best suited for radio and not best suited for a major label.

LCMS: Would you say it was too dark?

BD: Yeah, but that’s the way I like to make it, I didn’t wanna make a pop/commercial rap record. I said, “If I’m not allowed to make hip hop the way I want to make it then I won’t make it, I’ll make soul.” I’ll make a really good soul album and I feel like I’ve done that but at the same time I’ve still done my hip hop record, it’s just gonna be released on Pet Cemetery after this comes out, so you know this record is important it shows people that I’m a songwriter and a singer and not just some angry white rapper! I am an angry white rapper, but I’m not just that. When this campaign is done I think I might do a reggae album, but it will be a reggae album with a story.

Like I said, I call what I do films for the blind and I think that every time I release a record, it’s gonna be based around a story, it has to be a film for the blind.

LCMS: So when you were writing The Defamation Of Strickland Banks, which undeniably sounds like it was influenced by Motown, did you see a lot of change in your surroundings compared to writing Who Needs Actions When You’ve Got Words?

BD: I matured a lot as a person. I stopped caring about what people’s perceptions were of me. I made a fan base off the back of first album, I kind of knew how they perceived me and I let that hold me back. I was writing a lot of music that I was looking to sell to other artists because I thought “If any of my fans hear this music they’ll hate it and they won’t like me.” then I thought, “Well fuck them, this is me! If you’re not a fan of what I do then you’re not a fan, then why should I fucking let you hold me back?”

I hate purists; I hate UK hip hop purists who hated me when I was coming out because I played the guitar. They slagged me off, they didn’t give me a chance, they didn’t listen to my lyrics, they just ripped me off because I wasn’t rapping over some lo-fi UK hip hop beat and talking about the sun, the moon and fucking Excalibur’s sword and using metaphors that were too intellectual for anyone to fucking understand, they hated me. Then I said “I don’t wanna be a fucking purist, fuck you, go on and have your little UK hip hop scene.” The irony is, the people who have become my fans, through me not wanting to be a purist, have to become Plan B purists and they don’t want me to change and they don’t want my music to be different.

Someone asked me, “Are you scared you’re gonna lose that fan base you had from the new fan base? Obviously you’re gonna make new fans, probably more, but are you scared that you’re gonna lose those fans?” and I said “No, because I’m just gonna win them straight back with the next record.”

LCMS: ‘Stay Too Long’ peaked at number 9 in the charts, so you’re doing something right.

BD: It is, but I don’t give a fuck about chart positions. If an artist is number one, that won’t make me respect them. I know how things get to number one; it’s by promoting music to kids and to a bunch of people that I have nothing in common with music-wise so I don’t judge things by chart position.

I know that probably all the fans of the first album love my music because it didn’t give a fuck about all that, it was just a good album, it was dark and uncompromising and I know that I’m gonna lose a couple of them with this record and like I said, I don’t care, because when The Ballard of Belmarsh comes out I’m gonna win them straight back.

LCMS: You’ve been acting as well. Recently you were in Adulthood and Harry Brown, and you’re working with Noel Clarke again in 4,3,2,1.

BD: I’ve got a little cameo, I don’t wanna talk it up too much – I’m literally onscreen for like a minute. It’s just a way of me saying thank you for giving me the opportunity in Adulthood. When friends coming knocking on the door saying “Can you do me a favour and appear in this film for a day?” am I supposed to say no? I couldn’t say no, I went down there and done it and had fun, it was like a flash in the pan.

LCMS: Was it hard juggling acting and music?

BD: No. It would be hard if I had to do them on the same day, but I would wake up and go “You’ve got to act today.” So bang, I’m an actor, I’m not thinking about music, I’m not writing music, I’m not talking to any of my producers that have been working on my music. It’s just acting today. And when I’m not acting it’s like “I’m doing music today.” I think the only time it gets hard is when you’ve got deadlines and everything’s happening at the same time and you haven’t got time.

Time aint a friend of mine, some days I wanna be working on my artwork and we’ve got to get it out by a certain time, we got deadlines and then I’ve got people saying “We’ve got to do this interview” and I’m like “I can’t do the interview because I’m working on my artwork and it’s got to be done by 12 o’clock today.” And they’re like “yeah, but this interview’s really important.” and then you’ve got someone going “You’re supposed to be in this film today” and whatnot.

That’s the only time when it gets hard, because it’s busy, but you could be busy with so much other shit and that doesn’t have to be because you’re juggling music and film, it might be that I’m busy moving house while I’m trying to record my record. You’re still a normal person and you still have responsibilities and shit like anyone else, yeah I’m busy but, there’s thousands of other motherfuckers out there that aint musicians, that aint actors, that are fucking busy as well so you can’t complain.

LCMS: How much truth did you find in the cliché of ‘the difficult second album’?

BD: None, because this was like making another first album, because it was a completely different style of music .It would have been harder to make an album like the first one, because I’ve already done it so why the fuck am I doing it again for? The next album – if I decide to do reggae- willll be like making a first album as well.

LCMS: That’ll be very interesting to see.

BD: We’ll see…I can try my hand at reggae; my reggae voice sounds completely different to my soul voice. The concept’s the most important thing in the story and the lyrics for me; the music is secondary to that.

LCMS: Where do you find your inspiration for your dark lyrics like ‘Suzanne’ on Paint It Blacker?

BD: My mate (Semothy Jones) found the record ‘Suzanne’ by Leonard Cohen he cut it up and put a hip hop beat to it and said “Check this beat” and I said it was cool and was a good beat. I said “You’ve got to take that Suzanne thing out of the chorus though because it’s not relevant.” and he said “Why don’t you write a song about the Camden Ripper and one of the prostitutes that was never found and call it ‘Suzanne’ and that’ll make it relevant” so I went and done it.

I’ve always been able to do that. When I used to just be an R ‘n’ B singer, my friends used to come round my house and go “Ben, I’m in love with this girl, you’ve gotta write her a song for me!” and I’d go “Alright, what do you want it to be called?” and he went “To the one I love” and I went “Alright, cool.” Bang, wrote this song called “To The One I Love” and it was one of the best R ‘n’ B songs that I wrote at that time, fuck, I wrote that 10 years ago! But no one’s ever heard it; I’ve got all these songs that no one’s ever heard.

LCMS: Maybe you could release a little compilation?

BD: Maybe, but that shit is like really R ‘n’ B, like modern R ‘n’ B, like Usher! I don’t how the fuck people are gonna take that; they’re having trouble with this album which is like classic Motown stuff.

LCMS: So after this campaign and possible Reggae album, what’s next?

BD: I’m directing a film this year called ‘Ill Manors’ this year, it’s my directorial debut, it’s shot on a very small budget and separate from the label. It is music-based; there are six short stories that spill into each other that are narrated by a different rap song. It’s kind of like The Defamation Of Strickland Banks but it’s made for the cinema, so when the soundtrack comes out it will be a soundtrack to a film as opposed to The Defamation Of Strickland Banks which is an album.

LCMS: Finally, have you got a message for the youth of today?

BD: Yes I have. If there’s something you wanna do and if you’ve got a talent, if you’re good at something and other people tell you that you’re good at it – because some people could just gas you and chat shit and tell you that you’re a good rapper when you aint, and you kind of live life under false pretences. But if you know you’re good – and I mean really know – and other people know you’re fucking good at something you do, then make that your life. Go on the dole, sell a little bit of weed to get by so you haven’t got to work if you have to do that. Now I’m not saying sell crack – definitely don’t go near crack or heroin!

But if you have to sell a little bit of weed, if you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do to get by so you can focus all your time on what you wanna do, then fucking do it! And one day you will get where you will get to where you wanna be – it’s taken me 10 years – but I’ve had fun. It’s not like it’s just been 10 years of hard work and nothing else, I’ve had fun, I’ve had experiences and I regret nothing. I haven’t achieved everything I wanna achieve, but I’ve achieved quite a lot for a 26-year-old.

The Defamation Of Strickland Banks is out now, click here to get it on iTunes

Less Common More Sense: Who are you?

Doug: I’m Doug, I’m the drummer.

Helen: I’m Helen and I play keyboard and guitar.

Emily: Hi I’m Emily and I play guitar and sing a bit.

Laura: I’m Laura, I play the bass and I sing as well.

LCMS: Who’s the main David Cassidy aficionado?

Girls: Doug!

H: Doug’s his lovechild!

D: Lies!

E: This is the song that Doug really put a lot into; he got into the whole spirit of it! (giggles)

D: Lies, lies, lies. (possibly in denial?)

LCMS: Some people get together for a love of the Ramones or whatever, have you decided to get together for a love of David Cassidy?

L: Exactly, David Cassidy is the only thing that unites us.

LCMS: Has being featured on the Rough Trade Indiepop ’09 compilation been much help?

E: I get a lot of phone calls from friends who are in pubs and say “I’m in a pub and can hear your song!”

L: That’s been the main thing really!

H: The only thing!

L: Emily gets more phone calls from her friends.

E: Yeah, more people call me up; it’s really nice, which is basically why I’m in a band!

LCMS: Who is ‘Betty’?

H: Umm, Doug is.

L: Who do you think Betty is?

LCMS: (In a feeble attempt at a ‘smart guess’) I think Betty could be your manager… your evil manager.

L: She’s sort of like a fantasy aunty character. She’s like a mad aunt in our minds.

LCMS: (Pointing at an empty seat) Is she sitting there right now?

L: She’s always over our shoulders, telling us to eat more cookies saying “I made these especially for you.” (There were some cool animal shaped cookies on the table)

LCMS: Could you give me a brief outline of the music making process?

H: We all do a bit. Sometimes Laura comes into practice saying “I wrote this, took me 10 minutes last night” and it’d be like a ‘David Cassidy’ or something and we’ll just do parts. I’m not very good at writing lyrics so I’d just write a chord sequence at times, then Emily would write a riff and Emily writes lyrics sometimes too.

E: We’re a lot more collaborative, I think we got a bit lazy and just write together whereas before we’d do our ‘homework’ and have it all properly sorted out and practice with a song that’s written.

LCMS: Who – apart from David Cassidy – would you say are your main influences?

E: 60s girl-bands!

H: Some c86 bands.

L: Sorry my mind’s just gone blank!

E: Has it really?! (giggles) We like Twee-pop bands from the 80s too.

LCMS: What about bands out there now?

H: Wetdog.

E: We love Wetdog.

H: Je Suis Animal, Veronica Falls, Male Bonding, Not Cool, KASMS, the human RACE.

LCMS: Any future plans?

H: We’ve got an album coming out.

L: Eventually!

H: Yeah, probably June 2011!

E: Late late May/ Early June is the current date and we’re playing Camden Crawl on both dates as well.

LCMS: (The lights dimmed dramatically as Emily mentioned the Camden Crawl) You mentioned the Camden Crawl!

E: It’s the curse of Camden Crawl!

LCMS: Finally, have you got a message for the youth of today?

L: Read. (giggles)

H: Don’t go on the internet!

L: Read – but not on the internet.

E: You could just put the first bit; (to the girls) it’s going on his blog! (giggles)

(I think what they meant to say was read blogs, especially this one. Like everyday. Religiously. As if your life fucking depended on it. Seriously.)

So there you have it, a possibly soon-to-be-released album, two dates on the Camden Crawl and some brilliant advice for the youth of today. Make sure you check out Betty and the Werewolves on the Rough Trade Indiepop ’09 compilation and if you’re going to the Camden Crawl, you know what to do.

A drummer playing bass, a bassist playing drums, a former church guitarist and a singer who didn’t believe me when I said she had a beautiful voice. Who’d have thought it would work out in the end?

The Racket are a brand spanking new band from London combining members of The Duloks, Official Secrets Act, The Sexual Hot Bitches and Dance Magic Dance to make the kind of music the Ramones would have made, if they were mainly female – and wrote songs about boys. They played their first ever gig at the Old Blue Last and I got their first ever interview.

Less Common More Sense: Who are you and what do you do in The Racket?

Helen MacBain: I’m Helen and I sing in The Racket.

Mar Sellars: Hey I’m Mar; I play bass and attempt to shout back-up vocals.

Lawrence Diamond: I’m Lawrence Diamond and I play drums.

Laura Hernando: Hi I’m Laura and I play the guitar and do backing vocals.

LCMS: Who inspired you four to get together?

MS: Lawrence, me and Laura were at my house watching Ramones documentaries and Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, eating takeaway pizza and just making jokes about starting a band and Lawrence was like “Yeah!” and he didn’t really think that me and Laura were serious.

LH: I thought you weren’t serious too!

MS: OK, I was the only serious one.

LH: I used to play guitar 10 years ago, in church, and I hadn’t played ever since.

LD: God loves this band Johny.

LH: We’re on a mission from God!

HM: Please don’t quote that, we’re not on a mission from God!

LH: But that’s from The Blues Brothers! Oh yeah, (back to the story) I was like “I wanna play guitar again.”

MS: So we formed the band so Laura could play guitar, I hadn’t played bass in a band for eight years and was like “I wanna play bass, I haven’t played bass for so long and I hate playing drums!”

LD: Ignoring the fact that I play bass for a living.

MS: And I was like “Lawrence, I’m playing bass – you can’t play bass!” so he got ostracised to the drums but he’s never played drums so it’s basically a band for everyone to learn to play their instruments and then…

HM: I was at a gig and I kind of knew Mar from round and about and we were in the toilet together – not in that way we were just queuing for the toilet – and she was like “Yeah, I’m gonna form this new band and we’re looking for a singer.” And I was like “Oh, I can sing a bit! I could try-out or something.”

MS: I basically offered the singing spot to Helen without checking with Laura or Lawrence and they’d never met her, I was like “Wicked you’re in my band!” then two days later I kinda sobered up and realised what I had done!

LD: Helen kinda cheated because she can actually sing and none of us can actually play our instruments.

MS: Helen’s old band and my band played a few shows together and that’s how we know each other.

LD: Helen and Laura like the same boys.

LH: It was only one!

MS: Oh yeah they shared one boy.

HM: No we’ve only kissed the same boy! (lots of giggles)

LCMS: Err, who has main song-writing duty?

Girls: Lawrence!

LH: Dictator!

HM: Lawrence ‘The Dictator’ Diamond! But can I just say that Lawrence is a genius.

LH: Mar and I tried to write a song once…

MS: We’ve written half a song, it’s about teenage boys and was inspired by you Johny.

LCMS: Why thank you, what’s it like being in a band?

HM: It’s really fun to be in this band at the moment. When we rehearse we just gossip.

MS: It’s really hard for Lawrence, I don’t think he’s been in a girl band before so he’s not used to the amount of talking that happens during practice.

HM: Yeah we do talk a lot about boys at rehearsal. We get half an hour to talk boys then half an hour to do rehearsals.

LH: I’d say it’s more like 90% talking about boys! (frantic giggling ensues)

LCMS: Give me a brief outline of the music song writing process.

LD: Lawrence sits in a room crying over a pen. Then he comes in, listens to Laura, Helen and Mar talk about boys for three hours, asks them if they wouldn’t mind learning some chords and then we write a song. Does that sound about right?

Girls: Yes! (more frantic giggling ensues)

LD: And then they complain about how the songs are shit.

MS: I only did that once! Things got better after that.

LCMS: Any future plans?

All: We’re gonna conquer the world!

HM: And meet lots of hot boys.

LH: Groupies! Groupies! Boy groupies!

LD: The only reason this band exists is so these girls can meet boys.

HM: That is not true! It’s all about the music!

LH: Nah, I’m only about the boys!

LD: If you want a Racket quote it’s got to be “Music is good but boys are better!”

Girls: Yeah!

HM: We’re probably gonna have more sleepovers and watch some DVDs.

LD: The Breakfast Club!

HM: The Devil Wears Prada, St. Elmo’s Fire…Definitely, Maybe’s a brilliant film.

LD: But it’s not as good as St. Elmo’s Fire!

HM: Have you seen Definitely, Maybe?!

LD: Have you seen St. Elmo’s Fire?!?

LH: Can we watch Working Girl?

LCMS: What about Sixteen Candles? That’s a pretty cool film.

LD: Sixteen Candles! Now we’re talkin’!

LH: I dyed my hair red because of Molly Ringwald and also because of Claire Danes in My So-Called Life.

LCMS: That is dedication. Final question, have you got a message for the youth of today?

LD: Don’t do drugs. Do boys!

LH: Don’t date boys in bands, but date girls in bands!

HM: Go out, have fun, do lots of dancing and drink some alcohol!

LD: Go straight-edge if you want to!

MS: Don’t worry about the future and enjoy the present.

LH: Carpe diem…Get a black eye/guy.

HM: And remember, it’s easier to go out in trainers than it is in heels.

MS: Don’t wear heels, they’re ridiculous!

LD: Wear heels they’re ace! (Lawrence was wearing heels)

MS: Boys wear heels, girls wear proper shoes!

HM: That was quite a few messages.

MS: Oh, and move across the world because it’s ace and then you’ll meet new friends. Like I have!

LH: Yeah, we’re really international!

LD: And if you’ve got spare time don’t start a band with three people who’ve never played their instruments before!

After their first ever interview, The Racket played their first ever gig and instantly became everyone’s new favourite band.

Their set was short but pretty sweet as a majority of the crowd would agree. It was even uploaded onto YouTube a few hours later! Check it out here.

After a The Racket’s shining debut it was time for Scottish glitter punk outfit Peter Parker who were only playing their second gig. Sadly, I missed most of it. But here are a few pictures courtesy of The Racket/Dance Magic Dance’s Laura (She was very busy that night. She played, DJ’d and took photos!).

Rough Trade compilationees (it’s a new word, it means someone who’s been featured on a compilation) Betty and The Werewolves were up next and showed the crowd why they were on it. They played some of the catchiest pop I’ve ever heard (trust me, I’ve listened to ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da’) and got the crowd all dancing.

One song that will forever be etched into my memory is ‘David Cassidy‘ which is out now. Be sure to catch them at the Buffalo Bar on the 12th of March.

All in all, a brilliant night had by everyone in attendance.

The berlin based group are certainly not as ‘new’ as mainstream media would like to have you think, they have infact been grafting for years. But i guess everybody understands nothing exists until you know about it.

Anyway, we have established that JAHCOOZI are sort of super cool, but what i guess you what to know is, what makes up a sick music collective like this? Well if you also want to make awesome music yummyness like JAHCOOZI, follow this is simple recipe, and you’ll be on the road to being the Gordon Ramsey music equivilent.

So the other day My boy J2k who is a member of Wiley’s new crew The A-listers and Jammer who is a member of the infamous crew BBK ( BOY BETTER KNOW) got our gladrags on and went to a menswear fashion show on the final day of London Fashion Week, over chocolate glitter cupcakes ( harrrd) we got discussing their various different new music projects which include J2K & Roses Gabor’s new single ‘Don’t let you go’ and Jammer’s new album which is coming out soon.

I’m finding that finally the UK urban music scene is getting some international recognition and its artists like these who are consistently pumping out Good, fresh beats that deserve recognition.

I am Super excited now as I am one of the very few DJ’s who have the original track ( its so fresh and new it hasn’t even got a release date yet!!!) So I got creative on the 1’s and 2’s and did a VS mix of J2K ‘Don’t let you go’ and Misteeq ‘All i want’. I will do a proper remix soon as i get a second, but for now enjoy and support good UK music!

check out J2K’S BLOG AND <ahref="http://twitter.com/j2klive">TWITTER.

MY VS MIX OF J2K ‘DONT LET GO’ AND MISTEEQ ‘ALL I WANT’ **EXCLUSIVE**!
The real female power lies in a new generation of female rappers- empowered women literally waxing lyrical about there passions and believes with freedom and eloquence.

No.Lay is a good role model, beautiful, witty, talented and a perfect example of someone who doesn’t just use her body ( unlike some of her contemporaries) to get attention! Let the lyrics do the talking and big ups to SBTV for putting this f64 ( freestyle-64 bars) out there!

For the new ANGLOMANIA TV ( which is launching soon) i was sent up to Liverpool ( My Dad’s hometown!) for the weekend to present a Documentary on Ryan Babel and his artists, the mad talented Perry Mystique and Juice FM ‘urban star’ winner 17 year old Chelcee.

Now you probably know Ryan as the 23 year old Dutch Liverpool player, but what you might not know is that Ryan AKA RIO is actually a very talented rapper and producer with a music ear of gold and under his new label Protunez, he is now championing fresh talent such as super producer and rapper Perry Mystique ( who may i just add is some kinda mad scientist in the studio-genius!) and young talent such as 17 year old scouser Chelcee ( who’s one video on youtube has reached over 17,000 hits!)

The documentary is out in March, and the full article will be out on the ANGLOMANIA BLOG, but for now, look out for a Perry Mystique and Sway music collab ( i can tell you right now its BIG), and for Protunez as a label to blow up in 2010/2011. This is one hell of a power team with multiple power projects on the go and i for one look forward to seeing these creative collaborations developing! Watch this space.
